What is somatic Work?
Somatic work is a holistic and integrative body based modality of healing. It promotes greater physical and mental freedom through contacting, expressing, and interpreting the intricate workings of the soma- the trinity of body, mind, and being.
At its heart, it is the process of receiving information and wisdom from centers of intelligence in the body outside of the mind. In congruence with evolutionary psychology, somatic work adopts the belief that human beings are wired to grow and expand- and are innately whole and capable of doing so.
Sessions with Kiri draw on perspectives and practices rooted in somatic psychology and yogic tradition. They are informed by over a decade of experience teaching yoga and meditation, working with the soma through massage and reiki work, and extensive study in psychology, yoga, body work, energy work, and somatic mind body coaching.
FAQs
How do somatic sessions differ from therapy?
Psychotherapy is fundamentally diagnostic in orientation and can work with a wider range of individuals. Somatic sessions are NOT therapy and cannot diagnose OR treat mental health conditions or physical health conditions, illnesses, or injuries. Somatic sessions/coaching is NOT a substitute for physical or mental health treatment. Somatic coaching is present and future oriented whereas in psychotherapy the past may be called upon and worked with safely and when required.
What does a Somatic session look like?
From an external perspective, a somatic session may look like a coaching or counselling session, with two people sitting talking. In contrast to traditional therapy, somatic sessions provide guidance and support to experiencing, expressing, and interpreting the sensations within the body. We work collectively to build your resources- both internal and external- to support the needs of the nervous system to navigate the process in a safe and regulated way- building resilience while enacting concrete transformation and growth. Practices may include but are not limited to: guided meditations, movement practices, writing practices, creative/expressive arts practices, guided self contact, use of props to support the body, and yogic practices.
